Mascaró vineyards, where it all begins

The Mascaró spirits, cavas and wines are borned in Penedès region, Spain, in “Mas Miquel” and “El Castell” estates, where we work the land for three generations.

The “Mas Miquel” estate is located in Aiguamúrcia (Alt Camp) and it has 35 hectares under vine cultivation, registered at D.O. Penedès and D.O. Cava.

The estate, which has a total of 170 hectares, is adjacent to the Monastery of the Holy Cross and has been dedicated to growing grapes through centuries because in the past it was owned by the monks of the monastery, who already worked the land.

“Mas Miquel” is one of the highest areas in the Penedès region and is bordering with D.O. Tarragona. This area is cold and it has light and wind, which prevents the vines from suffering many diseases, thus reducing the use of chemicals such as pesticides.

The quality of the Mascaró spirits, cavas and wines begins in the raise of these vineyards. The winemaker of the family takes care here of the first steps of the process, ensuring that the final product live up to our customers’ expectations.

Mascaró grape varieties

In “Mas Miquel” estate we have planted white varieties (Parellada, Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc) and red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Grenache).

Parellada is our most cultivated variety because it is best adapted to the highlands and so we get ripe grain at optimum time. All Mascaró cavas have at least 60% Parellada, which gives them a unique character unlike other local products.

In addition, our lands produce 8.000 kg of grapes per hectare, well below the 12.5 kg allowed by D.O. Cava, thus obtaining a high-quality raw materials as a starting point for our products.

The Mascaró distillates are produced with Parellada and Macabeo from this estate, and some specific varieties that grow on “El Castell” estate located on La Múnia (Alt Penedès), a few kilometers from Vilafranca del Penedès, the capital of the Penedès region.

“El Castell” estate has an area of 7 hectares planted with white varieties (Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Colombard), specific varieties for the production of brandy, one of our specialties.
